This project explores the design process behind hosting each Olympic Games. While I have never had the privilege to visit Greece, I chose it for inspiration because I wanted to design an Olympiad that went back to its home country without reusing the city of Olympia. I selected Rhodes instead, a city that once held one of the seven wonders of the world, allowing me to incorporate its historical significance into my design.
Ideation
To better visualize Rhodes, I conducted preliminary research and assembled a mood board. Additionally, I utilized a design matrix to generate ideas, drawing inspiration from the iconography of Greece, Rhodes, and the Olympics. This included elements such as the Colossus of Rhodes, the Dama Dama deer, mosaic tiles, medals, and the Olympic torch.
First Draft
My initial idea drew inspiration from the pillars at the entrance of Mandraki harbor, that stand where the feet of the Colossus once were, and combine that with the shape of an Olympic torch. However, this idea was ultimately discarded due to critique that saw it resembling an animal sacrifice more than an Olympic icon. Taking this into account, I pivoted and created the following design.
Bold, attention-grabbing header font paired with an old style body font to highlight the history of Rhodes
Colors from the landscape of Rhodes, pulling from the bright sand and water associated with it.
Pictograms that roughly draw from the shape of the mosaic tiles and organized into type of sport.
